Hotel lobby design: the first three seconds

A guest decides how they feel about a hotel in about three seconds, from the moment they walk in. They are not reading the design yet. They want to feel placed and comfortable. Placed means they know where to go without asking. Comfort comes from the scale, the materials and the light.

The front of house sets the tone for the whole stay. When the lobby, the entrance and the waiting areas are well designed, the guest feels looked after, and that is what brings them back.

I think the reception gets the least attention. Many are uncomfortable. They are built for staff efficiency and the guest comes second. Check-in is the first real contact, so I want a counter that is easy to approach, with room to put a bag down and to be heard. That changes how a stay begins.
